1942. The Second World War was at its height and still going the way of the Axis powers. In neutral Spain that same war was being carried forward in a secret and deadly game of cat and mouse. British intelligence were helping downed allied airmen and escaped prisoners of war from across occupied Europe to evade the Nazis then return to Britain where they could rejoin their units and carry on the fight.
Determined to stop this, the Germans dispatched a special action unit of the Abwehr - the Nazis own intelligence service - to northern Spain with orders to destroy the escape pipeline and those operating it.
The British soon found themselves under attack, their escape lines disrupted and personnel killed. It was vital that something be done to reverse the disaster which had overtaken the Spanish operation. It was soon realised that there was only one way out of this situation - to call on the services of Department Seven..........
Department Seven had been raised the previous year, after the British Prime Minister - Winston Churchill - ordered the establishment of an ultra secret branch of the existing intelligence apparatus to take the fight to the enemy with such ferocity it would shake them to their very core.
Department Sevens brief was simple - to assemble a team of men who were capable of carrying out extreme acts of violence under the most challenging of circumstances. In Churchill's own words "Dangerous operations are best undertaken by dangerous men, so I want cut-throats and brigands of the most bloodthirsty kind who will strike at the black heart of the beast, butchering the Nazis and their allies wherever they rear their ugly heads, with no thought for compassion or quarter."
Operating far beyond the normal remit of secret operations, Department Seven soon established its reputation as an instrument of death - with assassination and sabotage as its watchwords - to be called upon when only the most extreme of measures were required.
This unique type of ungentlemanly warfare was just what was required in Spain so, when the scale of the problem was presented to them, D7 soon realised that they would have to dispatch their best man..............
Harry Flynn is an ex Foreign Legionnaire, British Army Commando, safe cracker, cat burglar, renowned knife and fist fighter, one time French organised crime syndicate member, adventurer, serial womaniser and all round scoundrel. Chance writes cleverly and has invented a fascinating hero. The man is selfish and materialistic, yet gallant and patriotic enough to be admirable.
I enjoyed the plot. Note to writers working with WWII plots stop having Enigma machines turning up in every hole and corner of Europe. They were a s e c r e t!
The e part of this e-book is pathetic. Don't know who to criticise, but surely someone who writes so well cannot be so stupid about spelling and punctuation.E-books are very annoying.
This is a terrible book…absolutely awful. It’s poorly written. The story is uninteresting and flawed. British Intelligence sends a lone assassin to neutral Spain kill a German Abwehr cell of 8 agents during WW2. For starters the operation has no plan. The assassin is merely instructed to meet with the local Spanish Resistance and figure out a way to kill the enemy.The story has other flaws which I don't see a need to go in to. The book needs a complete editing as there are numerous grammatical and spelling errors. How published what amounts to a final manuscript is beyond me. I only read it through 35% before putting it aside. This is an amateurish attempt at writing a novel. I realize this is the author’s first attempt at writing a book, and maybe someday he may produce an entertaining product. If anyone would be good enough to let me know if and when this happens I will surely consider reading it.
All the British Prime Minister wanted was men who were the best trained to counter attack the Nazis Intelligence Service. One of the best of his men turned out to be Harry Flyn, a criminal! He could out match anyone with every test they gave him. He was a thief, safe cracker, a fist fighter, and cut throat blood thirsty guy who could also pass as a Gentleman. This book was hard to put down as the author introduces his hero. A lot of action, well written, highly recommend!
Storylines is very good but descriptions are too verbose that do not enhance the plot .needs to be more "Hemingwayish"

A most enjoyable book with great characters and plot. I have enjoyed reading this outstanding book, written by an outstanding author.
